Is The Trans Movement Adopting ‘The Paris Hilton Hierarchy Of Needs’?

From what I see, the trans movement is fighting it’s way into a pyramid paradigm, The Paris Hilton Hierarchy Of Needs.  The leaders of our movement are all stars, and we are all the fans, jumping like a kid at the back of the class with her hand up.  Me!  Me!  Pick me!  The world is constructed on media and popularity, more now than ever.

It makes me question – whose rules are we playing by?   And nevermind thinking, how can we get out of the box? (Or pyramid)  I mean, the HRC has been fighting back with anti-propaganda, as in Prop 8 and direct action to media outlets, as they did in Michigan recently.   But I think we need more.  We need to go at the enemy with content the way adbusters does.   It’s more hip, savvy etc and I just think it could be an effective style.  People respond to a message when it’s entertaining, period.

Ronald Reagan paved the way from Hollywood to The White House, and the road has become a four lane divided highway since then.  Progress.  Obama’s campaign had plenty of entertaining elements, and now there is even a blog by Variety that caters to the Hollywood / Washington connection: Wilshire and Washington

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers on the subject:

“It is not a dirty word,” he said of the spot that juxtaposes Obama with Britney and Paris, calls him “the biggest celebrity in the world” and then asks, “but is he ready to lead?”

“We are celebrating his fame, and the reality that this guy has entered Tom Cruise-type of fame.”

I guess Hitler was the one who really showed how to use media (radio) for mass exploitaton (brainwashing)  in WWII and the rest of the world took the ball and ran with it. Hollywood and Washington, sitting in a tree, fans instead of voters, what a Novelty.

  1. if we all unplug our computers and tv, how do we fight back in the media?

i mean is it better to work within the system or outside? cause history shows us that ignoring change doesn’t stop it from happening.

  2. Thanks for your reply.

Believe it or not, people who resist oppression, and fight for rights and social change – they do it automatically. I am one of those people. I live in a small area that the CIA thinks of as ‘a pocket of resistance’. I published an alternative political zine for six years. When I began, I was pasting typewritten bits and little drawings and graphics together, and photocopying off 500 of them. Then I’d walk around town and give them to people, leave a few here and there, and most of all – I would talk to people, LOTS of people. That is how change works. Unfortunately, many people on the internet think that a billion monkeys typing on keyboards will eventually produce a masterpiece. Wrong. The current trend of blogging and use of the internet will change – five years from now, personal computers will likely be a thing of the past. Anyway, keep resisting – it’s good for the soul. Peace. B.
